Reports released June 2018 reveal Stan Lee, creator of Marvel Comics, may have been the victim of elder abuse by his most recent business manager.

A temporary restraining order was issued while the matter awaits trial, but it brings greater light to a troubling trend in America.

Be aware of the statistics and risks.

According to the National Council on Aging, approximately 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some form of elder abuse, and of the nearly 5 million cases each year, only 7% are ever even reported to the police.

The elderly are often targets for abuse due to social isolation or mental impairment, meaning the most effective guard against their abuse is the active involvement of family and friends in their lives.

By staying aware of a loved one’s health, activities, and those around them you can most effectively assist in preventing their abuse.

Elder abuse carries severe consequences with victims facing a 300% higher risk of death compared to those who were not abused. Elderly victims also lose over $3 billion a year to fraud and abuse.

There are proactive steps that can be taken to mitigate some of these risks.

Having a well thought out estate plan establishes:

  • who makes what decisions
  • and how certain assets will be managed or distributed.

Having these decisions made beforehand:

  • prevents potential undue influence
  • and can greatly help in securing a loved one’s future.
If you believe you or a loved one are the victim of elder abuse please contact Adult Protective Services, or the local police.
